Behind the Secret Garden

Finally I have got to this point, I have made my way through the various projects and three years of University, some fantastic trips and an amazing work placement. Had lectures and chats with some of the most inspiring artists and designers. And of course have made some incredible friends who I will always hold dear.

All the hard work is now done, it's been marked… (eek!) And now on display for anyone to have a look! The Show is open for all of this week at Bath Spa University, Sion Hill, Bath, BA1 5SF… But now, have a sneak peak into all the background work that went into my final degree collection; the inspiration, the progress and production.

The 'Secret Garden' is a place of security, of escape, and contemplation, a private place to simply 'be'. My story is of a girl who has grown up and returns to this place, whether in reality or in her mind. This nostalgia conjures up feelings of comfort, of playfulness and fun. It is inspired by one of my favourite childhood stories, ‘The Secret Garden’ by Frances Hodgson Burnett, about a young girl discovering a hidden and forgotten garden. It is overgrown and unkempt, with curious dilapidating architecture and unruly foliage. She nurtures this place and it becomes her own.
Using imagery of wall gardens and decorative plasterwork, I will be exploring the romantic and playful themes of ‘The Secret Garden’ through 3D manipulation of knit and materials.
